Effect of Piroxicam (Feldene^(¢ç)) in Dysmenorrhea


Abstract
A non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug piroxicam was evaluated for the relief of primary dysmenorrhea. Thirty women from 18 to 32 years of age and 112 cycles were studied. Two capsules of 20mg piroxicam were given each morning for the first 2 days, then one capsule each morning on two subsequent days. Placebo was used in the third cycle of the four cycles of observation. It revealed significant efficacy of the drug in controlling the dysmenorrhea, marked and moderate effectiveness being 33.3% and 46.7% each. The degree of pain relief was tend to be increasing with the severity of dysmenorrhea comparing with other¢¥ drugs previously used. they responded much better in 6 (20%), better in 20 (66.7%) anO same in 4(13.3%) with this drug. There was no remarkable side effect although mild indfg estion and epigastric discomfort were noted in 2 cases.
